Blue Jays acquire Luplow and place Ryu on 60-day IL

The Toronto Blue Jays made a couple of significant moves recently, acquiring outfielder Jordan Luplow from the Cleveland Indians and placing starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 60-day injured list.

Luplow, 27, was acquired by the Blue Jays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. He has spent the last four seasons with the Indians, where he has been a solid contributor off the bench. In 2020, Luplow hit .192 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in 29 games.

While Luplow’s numbers may not jump off the page, he brings some much-needed depth to the Blue Jays’ outfield. With George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez both dealing with injuries, Luplow could see some playing time in the coming weeks.

As for Ryu, the left-hander was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right glute strain. Ryu has been one of the Blue Jays’ best pitchers this season, posting a 2-2 record with a 2.60 ERA in six starts. He has also struck out 35 batters in 34.2 innings pitched.

Losing Ryu for an extended period of time is a significant blow to the Blue Jays’ rotation. The team will now have to rely on other starters like Robbie Ray, Steven Matz, and Ross Stripling to pick up the slack.

Despite Ryu’s injury, the Blue Jays have been playing well lately. They currently sit in third place in the American League East with a record of 17-15. The team has been getting contributions from all over the roster, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has been one of the best hitters in baseball this season.

The addition of Luplow should only help the Blue Jays as they look to continue their winning ways. While he may not be a star player, Luplow is a solid bench option who can provide some pop off the bench. As for Ryu, the hope is that he will be able to return to the mound sooner rather than later.

In conclusion, the Blue Jays’ acquisition of Jordan Luplow and the placement of Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 60-day injured list are both significant moves. Luplow brings some much-needed depth to the team’s outfield, while Ryu’s injury is a blow to the starting rotation. Despite these setbacks, the Blue Jays have been playing well lately and will look to continue their winning ways as the season progresses.
