Maurizio Sarri has said leaving Chelsea after just one season was a big mistake on his part.
Sarri replaced compatriot Antonio Conte in 2018 and featured in Carabao Cup and Europa League finals in his first season.
After losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City on penalties, Sarri led Chelsea to a 4-1 win against Arsenal in the Europa League final.
Despite ending the season on a high, Sarri returned to Italy to take over at Juventus.
Looking back at his decision the 65-year-old believes that leaving Chelsea was a mistake.
“That was the most fundamental error in my career,” Sarri told Sky Italia.
“We had everything required to remain, it’s a difficult club to work at where you probably don’t get to finish the second season, as practically nobody did in the Roman Abramovich era.
“At least I would’ve remained in the general Premier League situation. We had a good journey there, as the previous season the team finished fifth, then we were third behind Liverpool and Manchester City, who were above all the rest.
“We won the Europa League with 13 victories and lost the Carabao Cup Final on penalties to Manchester City, after eliminating Liverpool and Tottenham, who that year had reached the Champions League Final.
“I made an enormous error that I should’ve avoided. The desire to return to Italy should’ve been inferior to the desire to stay in the Premier League, but that was not the case.”

Sarri gaf toe dat hij misschien te snel heeft gehandeld en niet genoeg tijd heeft genomen om zijn stempel op Chelsea te drukken. Hij erkende dat het moeilijk was om zijn filosofie en speelstijl in korte tijd over te brengen op de spelers, en dat hij misschien meer geduld had moeten hebben.
De voormalige Napoli-coach had aanvankelijk succes bij Chelsea, met een derde plaats in de Premier League en het winnen van de Europa League. Maar zijn relatie met de fans en sommige spelers was gespannen, wat uiteindelijk leidde tot zijn vertrek.
Sarri heeft sindsdien zijn excuses aangeboden aan de Chelsea-fans en heeft gezegd dat hij spijt heeft van de manier waarop hij de club heeft verlaten. Hij heeft ook aangegeven dat hij graag zou terugkeren naar de Premier League in de toekomst.
Het is zeldzaam dat een coach zo openlijk toegeeft dat hij een fout heeft gemaakt, maar het toont aan dat Sarri bereid is om te leren en te groeien als coach. Hopelijk kan hij deze ervaring gebruiken om sterker terug te komen en succesvol te zijn bij zijn volgende club.
