Former Nigerian international Sylanus Okpalla has disclosed that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle must do everything to qualify the team for the 2026 World Cup.
The Super Eagles, winless in their last four qualifiers, must turn their fortunes around to improve their chances of securing the only automatic qualification ticket from Group C to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking with Brila FM, Okpalla stated that Eric Chelle has no excuse not to qualify Nigeria for the Mundial.

“He said he has been watching the boys, so there is nothing like new and Coaches are used to it everywhere. The man from Liverpool just came and he’s trying to win the league for Liverpool. Mind you, that is his first time trying to claim the league title.
“I am not saying it works always but the idea of giving him a chance, no, there is no time for that. Once you take up a team, you are coming to change the situation, and there is no excuse. If he knows he can’t change the situation, why then was he brought in? He should have stayed in his country.”
Eric Chelle, voormalig Nigeriaans international en huidige assistent-bondscoach van de Super Eagles, heeft geen excuus om het Nigeriaanse nationale voetbalteam niet te kwalificeren voor het Wereldkampioenschap van 2026. Dit is althans de mening van voormalig Nigeriaans international Ifeanyi Okpalla.
Okpalla, die zelf 26 keer voor Nigeria speelde, gelooft dat Chelle alle middelen en talent tot zijn beschikking heeft om de Super Eagles naar succes te leiden in de aanloop naar het WK van 2026. Met spelers als Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi en Samuel Chukwueze in de gelederen, heeft Nigeria een sterke basis om op voort te bouwen.
Chelle, die eerder als assistent-bondscoach werkte onder Gernot Rohr, heeft een schat aan ervaring in het internationale voetbal en kent de Nigeriaanse voetbalcultuur als geen ander. Hij heeft ook laten zien dat hij in staat is om met jonge talenten te werken en hen te ontwikkelen tot topvoetballers.
Okpalla benadrukt echter dat het niet genoeg is om alleen maar talent te hebben. De Super Eagles moeten ook eenheid en discipline tonen, zowel op als buiten het veld. Chelle moet ervoor zorgen dat het team goed georganiseerd is en dat de spelers gemotiveerd zijn om te presteren op het hoogste niveau.
Met de steun van de Nigeriaanse voetbalbond en de fans achter zich, heeft Chelle alle middelen tot zijn beschikking om succesvol te zijn. Het is aan hem om deze kans te grijpen en ervoor te zorgen dat Nigeria zich kwalificeert voor het WK van 2026 en daar een goede indruk achterlaat.
Al met al is het duidelijk dat Eric Chelle geen excuus heeft om de Super Eagles niet te kwalificeren voor het WK van 2026. Met zijn ervaring, talent en steun van de fans en bond, moet hij in staat zijn om Nigeria naar succes te leiden in de komende jaren. Het is nu aan hem om deze kans te grijpen en geschiedenis te schrijven met de Super Eagles.
