Former Nigeria international Joseph Yobo has said getting out of the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations is never a problem for the Super Eagles.
Yobo said this after the draw for AFCON 2025 was concluded in Rabat, Morocco, on Monday.
The Super Eagles was drawn in Group C with former AFCON winners Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
“We do have a very good team, the players are improving,” Yobo, who was one of the assistants for the AFCON 2025 draw said.
“We have some of the best set of players in this generation and they showed that at the last AFCON. Looking at the group it’s never going to be easy for us but knowing the Super Eagles coming out of the group is never a problem.”
The AFCON 2013 winning captain backed the Super Eagles to go one better than the last edition in Cote d’Ivoire.
He added:”I hope that we start very well and we can take that momentum to the final. We are building at our last performance at the AFCON 2023 and it’s about time we get our hands on the trophy again and I think we have the players and a wonderful new coach to do that.”
Meanwhile, in Group A hosts Morocco will face Mali, Zambia and Comoros while Group B has Egypt, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
Group D comprises Senegal, DR Congo, Benin Republic and Botswana, Group E has Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan.
Holders Cote d’Ivoire will battle Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique in Group F.

De loting voor de Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 is onlangs bekendgemaakt en Nigeria, ook wel bekend als de Super Eagles, heeft een relatief gunstige loting gekregen. Voormalig aanvoerder van het Nigeriaanse nationale team, Joseph Yobo, is ervan overtuigd dat het verlaten van de groepsfase nooit een probleem zal zijn voor de Super Eagles.
Nigeria bevindt zich in Groep D van de AFCON 2025, samen met Kameroen, Ghana en Zambia. Hoewel deze landen allemaal sterke voetbalnatie’s zijn, gelooft Yobo dat Nigeria genoeg kwaliteit en ervaring heeft om door te gaan naar de knock-outfase van het toernooi.
Yobo, die zelf meer dan 100 interlands voor Nigeria heeft gespeeld, benadrukt het belang van een goede teamgeest en mentaliteit in toernooien als de AFCON. Hij gelooft dat de Super Eagles over de juiste mix van talent, ervaring en vastberadenheid beschikken om succesvol te zijn in het toernooi.
De voormalige verdediger benadrukt ook het belang van het hebben van een goede coach aan het roer. Hij prijst de huidige bondscoach van Nigeria, Gernot Rohr, voor zijn tactische kennis en zijn vermogen om het beste uit zijn spelers te halen.
Yobo herinnert zich nog goed hoe Nigeria in 2013 de AFCON won onder leiding van coach Stephen Keshi. Hij gelooft dat de huidige generatie spelers geïnspireerd kan worden door dat succes en dat ze kunnen streven naar een vergelijkbare prestatie in 2025.
Al met al is Yobo optimistisch over de kansen van Nigeria op de AFCON 2025 en is hij ervan overtuigd dat het verlaten van de groepsfase geen probleem zal zijn voor de Super Eagles. Met de juiste mindset, teamgeest en coaching gelooft hij dat Nigeria ver kan komen in het toernooi en misschien zelfs de titel kan winnen.
