The Libya Football Federation has threatened to take legal action against Nigeria after the Super Eagles pull out of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matchday four encounter.
The Super Eagles were stranded at the Al Abaq Airport for several hours after arriving Libya for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matchday four encounter against the Mediterranean Knights.
The players cited safety concerns as reason for their action.
The LFF accused the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for refusing to cooperate with them.
The statement read, “The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, stressing that it will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team.”
“The LFF also mentioned that the incidents beyond its control could not be compared to what the Libyan team experienced in the first leg, suggesting that the Nigerian federation was responsible for the mishandling of both the initial and return legs.
“The Libyan Federation attaches some inhumane footage that did not prevent the Libyan mission from playing the Nigeria-Libya match last Friday in Nigeria, out of cooperation with the Confederation of African Football.
“The Libyan Football Federation clarifies that its Nigerian counterpart did not cooperate with it in any way, whether regarding the first or second leg match, noting that the events beyond our control do not equal a small part of what the Libyan national team was exposed to in the first leg match,” it said.
The statement further offered an apology to Libyan football fans for the confusion and delays in the match arrangement, attributing these issues to the NFF’s actions.
“The Libyan Football Federation apologises to Libyan football fans everywhere and to the parties concerned with the match arrangements due to the state of confusion caused by the Nigerian Football Federation, which led to the match not being held on time,” the statement concluded.

De voetbalwereld is in rep en roer nadat de Nigeriaanse voetbalbond aankondigde zich terug te trekken uit de kwalificatiewedstrijden voor de Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) van 2025. De Nigeriaanse voetbalbond gaf aan dat ze niet tevreden waren met de organisatie van de kwalificatiewedstrijden en besloten daarom om niet langer deel te nemen.
Deze beslissing heeft echter geleid tot grote verontwaardiging bij de Libische voetbalbond, die nu dreigt met juridische stappen tegen Nigeria. De Libische voetbalbond beweert dat de terugtrekking van Nigeria hen benadeelt en dat het in strijd is met de regels van de Afrikaanse voetbalconfederatie (CAF).
De AFCON is een van de meest prestigieuze voetbaltoernooien op het Afrikaanse continent en het is dan ook van groot belang voor alle deelnemende landen. De kwalificatiewedstrijden zijn bedoeld om te bepalen welke landen zich kwalificeren voor het toernooi en het is dan ook ongebruikelijk dat een land zich op het laatste moment terugtrekt.
De Nigeriaanse voetbalbond heeft nog niet gereageerd op de dreiging van juridische stappen vanuit Libië, maar het belooft een interessante ontwikkeling te worden in de aanloop naar de AFCON van 2025. Het is te hopen dat beide partijen tot een oplossing kunnen komen die recht doet aan alle betrokken partijen en dat het toernooi uiteindelijk zonder verdere problemen kan plaatsvinden.
