The Toronto Blue Jays secured a thrilling comeback victory against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, preventing a sweep by the American League Central leaders. The Blue Jays trailed 5-0 after the first inning, but they rallied to score six unanswered runs and secure a 6-5 win.
The Twins got off to a hot start, scoring five runs in the first inning off Blue Jays starter Trent Thornton. However, Thornton settled down after the rough start and held the Twins scoreless for the rest of his outing. He finished with six innings pitched, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Blue Jays offense came to life in the third inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to one. Randal Grichuk got things started with a leadoff double, and Bo Bichette followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then hit a two-run double to left field, and Teoscar Hernandez followed with a two-run homer to right-center field.
The Blue Jays tied the game in the fifth inning when Guerrero Jr. hit a solo homer to left field, his 16th of the season. They took the lead in the sixth inning when Hernandez hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot to left field.
The Blue Jays bullpen was excellent in relief of Thornton, as Wilmer Font, Ryan Borucki, and Jordan Romano combined for three scoreless innings. Romano earned his first save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth inning.
The win was an important one for the Blue Jays, who had lost their previous three games and were in danger of being swept by the Twins. The victory also moved them to within two games of the second wild-card spot in the American League.
The Blue Jays will now head to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox. They will look to continue their winning ways and gain ground in the playoff race.
