Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo says the team must strive to have a good start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The three-time African champions are pitted in Group C with Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
“A good start is very important. The first two games are very important. It is very, very crucial,”Yobo told ESPN.

“But the Tunisia game could be the one that decides group winners, so if we can take six points from the other two, we don’t want to chase Tunisia.
“That is obviously a big game. They are an experienced side, always frequent at the AFCON. We are used to them, we have played them many times, even during my own time and they are used to us as well. So it’s going to be a big clash. It’s the biggest game in our group.
“That being said you have Uganda and Tanzania. On paper they might be the underdogs but we saw at the last AFCON, underdogs were pulling surprises.”
The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Fez on Tuesday, December 23.

De voormalige Nigeriaanse internationale voetballer Joseph Yobo heeft gewaarschuwd dat de Super Eagles een langzame start moeten vermijden op de Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025. Yobo, die nu assistent-bondscoach is van Nigeria, benadrukt het belang van een sterke start in het toernooi om succes te behalen.
De AFCON is een van de meest prestigieuze voetbaltoernooien op het Afrikaanse continent en wordt elke twee jaar gehouden. Nigeria heeft in het verleden grote successen behaald op het toernooi, met drie overwinningen in 1980, 1994 en 2013. Yobo gelooft dat de Super Eagles het potentieel hebben om opnieuw te zegevieren, maar waarschuwt dat een trage start hun kansen kan ondermijnen.
“De AFCON is een zeer competitief toernooi en elke wedstrijd is cruciaal”, aldus Yobo. “Een langzame start kan ervoor zorgen dat we achterop raken en het moeilijker maken om ons te kwalificeren voor de volgende ronde. We moeten vanaf het begin scherp en gefocust zijn.”
Yobo benadrukt ook het belang van teamwerk en discipline om succesvol te zijn op de AFCON. “We hebben getalenteerde spelers in het team, maar talent alleen is niet genoeg”, zegt hij. “We moeten als eenheid spelen en ons houden aan de tactieken en instructies van de coach. Discipline is essentieel als we willen winnen.”
De voormalige verdediger moedigt de spelers aan om hard te werken en zich voor te bereiden op het toernooi. “We moeten ons goed voorbereiden, zowel fysiek als mentaal”, zegt Yobo. “We moeten ons concentreren op onze doelen en er alles aan doen om ze te bereiken. Met de juiste instelling en inzet kunnen we ver komen op de AFCON.”
Yobo’s woorden dienen als een herinnering aan de Super Eagles dat ze niet kunnen verslappen tijdens de AFCON in 2025. Met de juiste mindset en toewijding kunnen ze hun potentieel waarmaken en streven naar succes op het prestigieuze toernooi.
