Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has cleared the air on his recent comments which belittle the Africa Cup of Nations.
Carragher suggested that AFCON does not carry the same weight as other major international tournaments.
The 47-year-old remarks have sparked widespread criticism from football figures and fans alike.
“I love debates, but what I would never want to be described as a pundit is ignorant and disrespectful. It was never my aim, whether it’s a team, a player, a continent or a tournament,”said on CBS Sports Golazo UEFA Champions League show.

“Where I would say I got it wrong is I was clumsy with my language in describing AFCON as not a major tournament. I was trying to explain the merits of Mo Salah winning the Ballon d’Or, and I felt, not just AFCON, the Asian Cup or the Gold Cup. There are five major tournaments besides the World Cup for each continent.
“However, some of them don’t resonate with the people who vote for the Ballon d’Or, and that’s not an opinion; it’s a fact. Look at those who’ve won the award over the last 40-50 years.
“I’ve been rooting for Mo Salah to be the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or since George Weah in the mid 90’s, but I should have been a lot tidier with my language around it, but if you look at where the Euros are right now, it resonates with some of the journalists, national coaches and captains who choose who wins the award.
“One of the reasons is that we forget that the Ballon d’Or was primarily for European football, so maybe there is a bias to European football. It was not my aim to offend anybody.”

Voormalig Liverpool-verdediger Jamie Carragher heeft onlangs zijn excuses aangeboden voor verkeerde opmerkingen die hij maakte over de Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Carragher had eerder kritiek geuit op de timing van het toernooi en beweerde dat het de Premier League-clubs benadeelde door hun spelers voor een langere periode te verliezen.
In een recent interview met een sportnieuwswebsite gaf Carragher toe dat hij zich had vergist en dat hij zijn standpunt moest herzien. Hij erkende dat de AFCON een belangrijk toernooi is voor Afrikaanse voetballers en dat het hen de kans geeft om hun land te vertegenwoordigen op een internationaal podium.
Carragher benadrukte ook dat het belangrijk is om respect te tonen voor de Afrikaanse spelers die deel uitmaken van de Premier League en die trots zijn om hun land te vertegenwoordigen tijdens de AFCON. Hij bood zijn excuses aan aan alle fans en spelers die mogelijk beledigd waren door zijn eerdere opmerkingen.
De voormalige Engelse international benadrukte ook het belang van diversiteit in het voetbal en het respecteren van verschillende culturen en tradities. Hij benadrukte dat het belangrijk is om open te staan voor andere perspectieven en meningen, en om te leren van onze fouten.
Carragher’s openbare verontschuldiging toont aan dat zelfs voetbalanalisten kunnen leren en groeien door hun fouten toe te geven en hun standpunten te herzien. Het is een belangrijke les voor iedereen in de voetbalwereld en daarbuiten om respectvol te zijn tegenover anderen en om open te staan voor nieuwe ideeën en perspectieven.
