Liverpool manaher Arne Slot has said start of the season nobody saw his side as Premier League title contenders.
First-half goals from Mohamed Salah, his 30th of the season, and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a 2-0 win for Liverpool at Manchester City.
It was a first league victory at the Etihad Stadium for Liverpool since November 2015.
Although second-placed Arsenal have a match in hand, Slot’s team would have to lose three times – they have suffered one league defeat all season – in their last 11 matches to even offer the chance of being overtaken.
“What we do know is no-one saw us a title contender when we started in the beginning of the season and I think no-one in the world of football expected City not to be so close to the one that leads the league if they are not the one that leads the league.
“Two years ago Liverpool played Champions League and wanted to compete for the league and that was difficult and they ended up sixth.
“Last season they were in the Europa League and were competing until five, six, seven or eight games before the end.
“What I was curious was about can we do both? Until now we are doing quite a good job in both competitions, but also we have quite a difficult draw in the Champions League (against Paris St-Germain).”
Liverpool-baas, Jurgen Klopp, heeft recentelijk benadrukt dat aan het begin van het seizoen niemand zijn team als titelkandidaten zag. Ondanks de hoge verwachtingen die altijd rondom de club hangen, was Liverpool niet direct getipt als favoriet voor de Premier League-titel.
Klopp gaf aan dat er veel twijfels waren over zijn team, vooral na het vertrek van sterspeler Philippe Coutinho naar Barcelona. Veel mensen dachten dat Liverpool het moeilijk zou krijgen om zijn positie in de top van de competitie te handhaven.
Echter, met een sterke start van het seizoen en indrukwekkende prestaties tegen topclubs zoals Manchester City en Arsenal, heeft Liverpool bewezen dat ze zeker wel titelkandidaten zijn. Klopp benadrukte dat het harde werk en de toewijding van zijn spelers hebben geleid tot deze positie in de competitie.
De Duitse manager is trots op wat zijn team heeft bereikt tot nu toe en gelooft dat ze nog steeds kunnen strijden om de titel. Hij benadrukte echter ook dat er nog veel wedstrijden te spelen zijn en dat ze zich niet te veel moeten laten meeslepen door de huidige successen.
Liverpool staat momenteel bovenaan in de Premier League en heeft een voorsprong op de concurrentie. Klopp en zijn team blijven gefocust op hun doelen en zullen blijven strijden tot het einde van het seizoen.
Het is duidelijk dat Liverpool dit seizoen serieus genomen moet worden als titelkandidaat, ondanks de twijfels die er aan het begin van het seizoen waren. Klopp en zijn team hebben bewezen dat ze tot grote dingen in staat zijn en zullen blijven vechten voor de titel.
