Former Man United star Paul Scholes has warned the Red Devils that the team will be a relegation candidate if they don’t sign quality players.
The former England international stated that the team lacked a strong spine and criticized Ruben Amorim’s current squad, highlighting significant weaknesses.
Despite recent wins, Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet that United must make at least five major signings to avoid a potential crisis.
“There are a few things that are concerning. There’s a lot of stuff he (Ruben Amorim) needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don’t see a core of players.

“When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great centre half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don’t think United have any of that in any position.
“I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre halves, two centre midfield players, and two centre forwards.
“Alright, I’ll go for one centre midfielders and one centre forward, but with a bit of stature, a bit of quality, and really create a spine. When you’ve got that spine right, then you can add bits to it.
“That spine, that core, is so important. If they don’t get that right this summer, this might sound ridiculous, but the form since this manager is in, they could be looking at relegation. I’m telling you, it’s been so bad.”

Scholes, die nu een voetbalanalist is, heeft zijn zorgen geuit over de huidige staat van het team en gelooft dat ze niet in staat zullen zijn om zich te handhaven in de Premier League als er geen drastische veranderingen worden doorgevoerd. Hij wijst op de recente slechte prestaties van de club onder manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer en gelooft dat er behoefte is aan een grote herstructurering.
De voormalige Engelse international heeft ook kritiek geuit op het transferbeleid van de club en gelooft dat er niet genoeg kwaliteit is in de huidige selectie om mee te doen aan de top van de competitie. Hij pleit voor meer investeringen in spelers van wereldklasse om de club weer naar succes te leiden.
Manchester United heeft de afgelopen jaren moeite gehad om te concurreren met de topclubs in Engeland en Europa. Ondanks het feit dat ze een van de rijkste clubs ter wereld zijn, hebben ze niet kunnen wedijveren met teams als Manchester City, Liverpool en Chelsea.
Het is duidelijk dat er grote veranderingen nodig zijn bij Manchester United als ze weer willen meedoen om prijzen. Of Scholes gelijk zal krijgen en de club volgend seizoen daadwerkelijk een degradatiekandidaat zal zijn, valt nog te bezien. Maar één ding is zeker: er is werk aan de winkel voor de clubleiding en het management om de club weer op het juiste spoor te krijgen.
