Nigerian forward, John Okoye has bid farewell to the Egyptian club, Ceramica Cleopatra FC, after spending three years at the club.
In a letter addressed to the club, Okoye reflected on his time at Cleopatra with a whirlwind of emotions, acknowledging the extraordinary experiences and memories he had during his time at the club.
The 28-year-old thanked the club’s fans, teammates and management for their warmth, support and belief in him and credited their effort for the club winning the Egyptian Cup last season.
“It’s been an incredible three years of learning and unlearning at Ceramica Cleopatra. I am glad that I’ve been able to write my name in the club’s history and my time was indeed special, thanks to the fans and the management.
“As I embark on the next journey of my career, the love I felt here will always remain with me and I’m forever grateful for the chance to play here.”
Okoye scored eight goals plus two assists last season, playing an important role in the club’s brilliant performance last term.
He was also crucial to their second consecutive Egyptian Cup triumph, scoring the opener in the convincing 3-1 victory over Tala’ea El-Gaish in the final of the competition last August.
Before achieving domestic success with Ceramica Cleopatra last season, Okoye was on loan at Al Ahli Tripoli in Libya, winning the 2022/23 Libyan Premier League and Libyan League Cup.
Okoye, a former MFM FC player is a lethal goal scorer and he began to earn that reputation abroad when he turned in 121 goals in 104 games for Turkish Cypriot club Yenicami AK between 2016 – 2019.
He was twice named the top scorer of the Northern Cypriot League in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons.

Okoye kwam vorig jaar bij de club en wist al snel indruk te maken met zijn snelheid, techniek en doelgerichtheid. Hij scoorde belangrijke doelpunten in de bekerwedstrijden en werd al snel een publiekslieveling bij de fans. Zijn vertrek komt dan ook als een verrassing voor velen.
De Nigeriaanse aanvaller heeft aangegeven dat hij toe is aan een nieuwe uitdaging en dat hij graag wil spelen in een competitie van hoger niveau. Verschillende clubs hebben al interesse getoond in Okoye en het lijkt erop dat hij binnenkort een nieuwe club zal vinden.
Het afscheid van Okoye is een aderlating voor de Egyptische bekerkampioenen, maar tegelijkertijd biedt het ook kansen voor andere spelers om zich te bewijzen en op te staan als nieuwe sterspelers. De club zal nu op zoek moeten naar een vervanger voor Okoye en hopen dat zij net zo’n impact kunnen maken als hij heeft gedaan.
Voor Okoye is het een spannende tijd, waarin hij zich zal moeten aanpassen aan een nieuwe omgeving en nieuwe teamgenoten. Maar met zijn talent en ervaring zal hij ongetwijfeld snel zijn plek vinden en opnieuw laten zien wat hij in huis heeft.
We wensen Paul Okoye veel succes in zijn verdere carrière en hopen dat hij blijft schitteren op het voetbalveld, waar hij ook speelt.
