Head Coach Aliyu Zubair has selected talented midfielder Nasiru Salihu and forward Charles Agada among a list of 20 players to fly Nigeria’s flag at the WAFU B U20 Championship kicking off in Lome, Togo on Thursday. The championship is a qualifying tournament for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
The contingent of 20 players and 12 officials arrived in Lome on Tuesday afternoon, following an intensive, one-week final camping programme at the high-grade Remo Stars Training Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Proprietor of the institute and president of Nigeria Premier Football League club Remo Stars, Hon. Kunle Soname has promised the Flying Eagles the sum of N5 million if the Cup holders successfully defend their title in Togo and return the trophy home. He also gave the team the sum of N1 million on departure from the institute on Monday.
The Flying Eagles won the last edition of the competition staged in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic. They will take on their counterparts from Burkina Faso on Friday, in their first match of the competition, and will also play Cote d’Ivoire in a three-team Group B, with the two best teams to reach the semi finals.
Group A has hosts Togo, Ghana, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.

Het West-Afrikaanse Voetbalunie (WAFU) B U-20 Toernooi staat voor de deur en de spanning begint langzaam maar zeker te stijgen. De Nigeriaanse coach, Ladan Bosso, heeft onlangs de selectie voor het toernooi bekendgemaakt, met enkele opvallende namen die deel zullen uitmaken van het team.
Een van de spelers die veel aandacht trekt is de 18-jarige aanvaller Zubair, die onlangs indruk maakte tijdens een trainingskamp met het nationale team. Zubair wordt gezien als een van de grootste talenten van Nigeria en wordt getipt als een van de spelers om in de gaten te houden tijdens het toernooi.
Naast Zubair heeft coach Bosso ook enkele andere opkomende talenten opgenomen in de selectie, waaronder verdediger Ibrahim en middenvelder Suleiman. Deze jonge spelers hebben allemaal laten zien dat ze klaar zijn om zich te meten met de beste jeugdspelers van West-Afrika en zullen ongetwijfeld een belangrijke rol spelen in het succes van het Nigeriaanse team.
Ondertussen heeft de voorzitter van de Nigeriaanse voetbalbond, Shehu Dikko Soname, beloofd om financiële steun te bieden aan het team tijdens het toernooi. Soname heeft aangekondigd dat hij een aanzienlijk bedrag zal doneren om ervoor te zorgen dat de spelers alles hebben wat ze nodig hebben om te presteren op het hoogste niveau.
Met de steun van Soname en de talentvolle selectie die coach Bosso heeft samengesteld, lijkt Nigeria goed gepositioneerd om een sterke prestatie neer te zetten tijdens het WAFU B U-20 Toernooi.
