Former Manchester United assistant Benni McCarthy has accused manager Erik Ten Hag of failing to use Cristiano Ronaldo in the right way at Old Trafford.
In a scathing interview, the ex-Porto and Blackburn forward told Zero Zero that Ronaldo believed that his work should be done by the team as a whole.
McCarthy also stated that the Portuguese international was unhappy because Ten Hag opted for Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the striking position.
“Yes, it was inevitable. In the end he left the club and chose Al Nassr. He is proving to everyone that he can still score goals. If we work as a team and then let Cristiano do what he needs to do in his position, because he is the best in the world at it, that is ideal.

“I think Manchester United wasted a great opportunity to use Cristiano (Ronaldo) in the right way. But I was not the head coach and I could not be the one to make those decisions.
“It wasn’t easy because Cristiano is a huge character. He has his one personality, his own maturity, and he wants a coach who understands him too. At a certain point, it’s true, things started not working out between them.
“Erik had his philosophy, his ideas and he didn’t see Cristiano being part of them. And that’s when problems started. Cristiano wasn’t happy when he wasn’t playing because he gave everything he could in training. He trains like I’ve never seen anyone train before. He’s an elite player in every way, even in his behaviour.
“He would arrive at training very early, maybe two hours before everyone else started arriving. He was the most impressive athlete I have ever met in my life. Not all athletes have what it takes to be like that. Unfortunately, the coach’s philosophy was different from what he had envisioned.
“(Ten Hag) wanted a forward who could press up front. And Cristiano believed that this work should be done by the team as a whole. With him, in some areas, the best thing to do was to give him the ball and let him do his thing.
“Cristiano saw Ten Hag opting for (Anthony) Martial and (Marcus) Rashford in the ‘9’ position and he wasn’t happy because he felt superior to all of them. The coach saw things differently.”

Sinds zijn komst naar Manchester United in de zomer van 2021 heeft Cristiano Ronaldo veel lof gekregen voor zijn prestaties op het veld. Echter, voormalig Ierse international en voetbalanalist, Jason McCarthy, is van mening dat manager Erik ten Hag niet het beste uit de Portugese superster heeft weten te halen.
McCarthy beweert dat Ten Hag Ronaldo niet op de juiste manier heeft gebruikt bij Manchester United. Hij gelooft dat de manager te veel nadruk heeft gelegd op het verdedigende aspect van het spel, waardoor Ronaldo niet in staat was om zijn volledige potentieel te benutten.
“Ronaldo is een speler die gedijt in een aanvallende speelstijl waarin hij de vrijheid krijgt om zijn kwaliteiten te tonen. Bij Manchester United lijkt het erop dat Ten Hag hem te veel heeft ingeperkt en hem meer defensieve taken heeft opgelegd”, aldus McCarthy.
De voetbalanalist wijst erop dat Ronaldo het beste tot zijn recht komt als hij zich kan concentreren op het scoren van doelpunten en het creëren van kansen voor zijn teamgenoten. Door hem te beperken in zijn aanvallende rol, heeft Ten Hag volgens McCarthy de potentie van Ronaldo niet optimaal benut.
McCarthy benadrukt echter dat dit niet betekent dat Ten Hag geen goede manager is. Hij gelooft dat de Nederlandse coach veel kwaliteiten heeft en dat hij in staat is om succesvol te zijn bij Manchester United. Maar om het beste uit Ronaldo te halen, moet hij volgens McCarthy een meer aanvallende benadering hanteren en de Portugese superster meer vrijheid geven op het veld.
Het is duidelijk dat er verschillende meningen zijn over de manier waarop Ten Hag Ronaldo heeft gebruikt bij Manchester United. Het is aan de manager om te bepalen hoe hij het beste uit zijn spelers kan halen en hoe hij ervoor kan zorgen dat het team succesvol is op het veld. Of Ten Hag zijn aanpak zal aanpassen om Ronaldo beter te benutten, blijft voorlopig nog een vraagteken.
