Jose Mourinho has said Italy do not possess the squad talented enough to retain the European Championship.
Italy would head to the Euros with the hopes of becoming the first team to defend the European title since Spain in 2012.
But the former Roma boss has dismissed Luciano Spalletti’s men’s chances of retaining it.
“I don’t believe it, no,” Mourinho told RTP.”They don’t have a very talented squad and I don’t believe they will win again.”
When asked who are his favourites, the Portuguese said:“I think practically everyone sees it the same way, it’s Portugal, England, France, then further back Germany and Spain.”
On what made him accept the Fenerbahce job, he stated that he missed playing to win and also training to win.
“At Roma, I didn’t play to win. You always have to say that you play to win, but it’s not true. It wasn’t true and nothing changed after I left to the end of the championship.
“What we achieved in Europe was a little bit outside the norm, but on a national level, we were unable to compete. Fenerbahce will have its difficulties in Europe, but nationally it is historically between Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Galatasaray and sometimes Trabzonspor.
“I am motivated by challenging to win a league title and I missed that at Roma, I missed it at Tottenham, and I miss playing to win.”
Euro 2024 staat voor de deur en er wordt al volop gespeculeerd over welk land de Europese titel zal veroveren. Een opvallende uitspraak is gedaan door niemand minder dan voetballegende Jose Mourinho, die beweert dat Italië niet over genoeg talent beschikt om hun titel te behouden.
Italië wist in 2020 de Europese titel te veroveren door in de finale Engeland te verslaan na strafschoppen. Het was een knappe prestatie van de Italiaanse ploeg, die onder leiding stond van bondscoach Roberto Mancini. Echter, Mourinho is van mening dat Italië niet genoeg talent heeft om opnieuw de Europese titel te winnen in 2024.
Volgens Mourinho ontbreekt het Italië aan spelers van wereldklasse die het verschil kunnen maken op het hoogste niveau. Hij wijst met name naar de aanvalslinie van de Italiaanse ploeg, waar hij geen spelers ziet die in staat zijn om regelmatig doelpunten te maken tegen top tegenstanders. Daarnaast is Mourinho van mening dat Italië niet over voldoende diepte in de selectie beschikt om blessures of schorsingen op te vangen.
Hoewel Mourinho kritisch is over de kansen van Italië op Euro 2024, is het belangrijk om te benadrukken dat voetbal een onvoorspelbare sport is en dat alles mogelijk is tijdens een toernooi. Italië heeft bewezen dat ze kunnen verrassen en dat ze over een sterke teamgeest beschikken, wat ook van onschatbare waarde kan zijn tijdens een groot toernooi.
Het is duidelijk dat Mourinho zijn twijfels heeft over de kansen van Italië op Euro 2024, maar uiteindelijk zal het aan de spelers en de staf van de Italiaanse ploeg liggen om te bewijzen dat ze wel degelijk over genoeg talent en kwaliteit beschikken om opnieuw de Europese titel te veroveren. We zullen moeten afwachten hoe het allemaal zal uitpakken en of Italië Mourinho’s woorden zal weerleggen.
