Born on November 5, 1952, in La Mesa, California, Walton’s basketball career began at Helix High School, where he led his team to back-to-back championships. He went on to play college basketball at UCLA under legendary coach John Wooden, where he won two NCAA championships and was named the Naismith College Player of the Year in 1972 and 1973.
After being drafted as the number one overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1974, Walton quickly made a name for himself in the NBA. He was a key player in leading the Trail Blazers to their first and only NBA championship in 1977, earning him the Finals MVP award. Walton also played for the San Diego Clippers, the Boston Celtics, and the Los Angeles Clippers during his NBA career, earning two All-Star selections and an NBA Most Valuable Player award in 1978.
